Elgg 1.0: Screencaps 2: Navigation

Elgg 1.0 features a great set of navigation features. They are both practical and elegant.

First, elgg has an attractive navigation bar across the top of each page similar to that of the admin side of WordPress 2.5.(Click to enlarge)

Elgg Toolbar

It features links to the user’s profile, dashboard, message and settings. It also has a search and log out function.

The left side bar gives access to a variety of areas on the site including public areas. A simple click on any item expands to reveal a number of options.

The final, and most interesting navigation may be found by mousing over any individual’s avatar. When you guide your cursor over an avatar, and small triangle appears. Click on the triangle and a number of options appear regarding an individual user as seen below:

From there, you can add/remove an individual as a friend and view their blogs, profiles, friends, files, etc. You can also send them a message.

In future posts, we will view the forums, blogs and other areas in Elgg 1.0.

Thanks for sharing about your experience w/Elgg. This is something that can be a key to the personal learning environment for students. And the fact that it is hosted locally (rather than commercially ala Ning) is significant. Funny you commented about installing some software on my server – I’ve been thinking that in the not-too-distant future Elgg may be the first to appear.

I agree about the importance of in house hosting for the reasons outline in one of my earlier posts: http://openedweb.com/blog/2008/02/26/why-not-run-your-own-school-web-20-sites/#comments . Frankly, I couldn’t use most of the hosted web 2.0 tools because most are restricted to students older than 12.

I’ll continue to post about Elgg’s core features as I can. I look forward to getting my hands on the code for my own use as I have little idea what the admin interface will be like. I’d really like a something new like Elgg at the beginning of the school year.
