New Elgg text area media tool

We have heard hints of a great new Elgg feature that will make life easier. I found a tidbit in the Elgg SVN. I wonder if this is what they meant:

While it does not appear fully wired up yet, this is an exciting and important functionality. It makes media easily embeddable in a way that works with the core file repository rather than creating a new one as my Tincymce/TinyBrowser extension did. This new text area feature gives access to all media from the  repository that an individual has access to, instead of giving everyone access to all files. It sorts them into categories according to the type of media.

Items are inserted by dragging and dropping them into the text field at the insertion point. Very simple and elegant.

Again, this does not appear entirely wired up yet. Hopefully, this will be one of the features of the Elgg 1.1 release.

Update: Please read additional information here.

    Hi Steve,

You are too eagle eyed for us ;)

This is the start of a drag and drop interface for users to embed and upload/embed media into any of the main text areas within Elgg: blogs, pages, forums etc.

It is not finished and has not been styled up yet, but, once done, it will be a big improvement.

    Cheers.

Wooah! Brilliant sleuthing Steve! This is huge. And I mean massive!
I am *so* pumped about 1.x now. One question though — are you thinking of putting this blog into Elgg?

Very brilliant architecture. My team and I had thought of a cool way to upload files by dragging and dropping photos to automatically start upload. I wrote a light-weight drag and drop uploader with javascript, it will be ready for release soon!

@mark Not sure what you mean by putting this blog into elgg.

I plan on broadening openedweb.com in the near future. Elgg is definitely part of the picture. I am currently working on an Elgg based Educational Technology Policy site as part of openedweb. In addition, I plan to support my presentations using something–probably Elgg. MediaWiki also has a place in the mix. Would love to see a mediawiki/elgg integration.

Okay–I think I get what you mean.

Go grab the blog mod (or any other) from

    https://code.elgg.org/extensions/plugins/

upload to mod directory and activate.

Nothing. Only Title, Blog text, Tags and Access. I tried with TinyMCE and without it.
I checked also blog/actions/edit.php and I can’t find any field for embed media.

I don’t know what the issue is. All I can tell you is that I have it functioning on one of my test installs. It works with both Mac Safari and FF3

If you would like to try it go to:

I need to say that the feature does not work yet! This is in SVN because it is under development. So, unless you are experimenting with SVN on a test rig (not a production set up) please don’t go looking for this as you will be disappointed at this stage.

Yes–believe me, I have crashed and burned many an installation playing with the trunk.

If destroying sites bothers you, then do NOT proceed!
