It looks like they have been working on access in groups. The latest SVN commit makes access control less granular. Now there is just one option to configure: Group Membership Permissions with the option of private (by invitation only) and public.

A preliminary test shows that it works as expected as do the content access controls for entities within the group. Now, however, BuddyPress actually has more options.

I, on the other hand, have much less experience with BP, so chime in when I am off the mark or there is something I left out!

Thanks for that detail Matt. I knew it was broken some time ago. I haven't really followed the Google groups. Of course, this is a moving target. Have you checked it in recent SVN revisions?

I am probably going to hold off on further reviews until Elgg 1.5. BP RC1 should be fair game as Andy says there should be no major changes between the release candidate and final.

Nice comparison. One small point is that the access controls on Elgg groups don't actually work at the moment. If you make a group anything other than public then you'll have a hard time adding members to it. If you do manage to add them then they will have a hard time setting the access controls on the content that they submit to the group. These bugs are high priority to be fixed in v1.5, which is due out this month.

Steven,

I'm really enjoying--and greatly appreciate---your play-by-plays with BuddyPress and Elgg, I know little about Elgg, so this is much needed info for me. And I really haven't taken the time to setup my own Elgg, so thanks.
