Elgg 1.5 RC released

A release candidate for Elgg 1.5 was unvealed by the Curverider team today. Release candidates have been tested and are generally very stable. Nonetheless, Curverider does not recommend its use for production sites.

The core Elgg team has been working feverishly to squash remaining bugs and enhance Elgg’s performance. They have committed over 100 commits to their Subversion repository since Saturday.

I have personally tested earler incarnations of Elgg 1.5 and am glad to report that it works well. I am sure that anybody has worked with earlier versions of Elgg will be pleased with the latest. Stay tuned for another post highlighting more enhancements to the software.

If you want a preview, it looks like the Community site http://community.elgg.org is now running on Elgg 1.5. I do disapprove of the way that the community site is used as a sandbox to test new features though. We need the thing to be stable.

I certainly understand your concern about the Elgg community. That being said, they have been running an Elgg 1.5 test site for a few weeks before porting the community to Elgg 1.5. I would say that it has been stable in the time that I worked with it. Most of the improvements have been enhancements suggested by the beta testers and working though Internet Explorer issues.

Running 1.5 as of today. Very excited about the media embed as this was a major short coming of Elgg in previous versions. Hopefully it remains intact in the final version. Elgg has certainly come a long way!

It embeds images, but multimedia creates a link to the resource.

Actually I’d prefer it to generate a link to images as well, since I am using LaTeX on my site. I can probably hack the plugin to make that work though.

Any idea why they changed the default theme? I rather liked the old one.

Hopefully they will make that and other themes that they have released compatible with Elgg 1.5.
