I don't think Donncha likes the additional pressure of having to move WPMu along to meet BuddyPress's needs. Can't say I blame him, but I'm not sure that it would be nearly as interesting without the multi blog functionality. Full featured blogs set BuddyPress apart from Elgg. Again, I think there is a real problem having progress predicated upon other projects to such a degree. That also gets us back to bbPress still being alpha. I saw that comment too.
