I am the fifth grade teacher at Wells Central School in a tiny Adirondack hamlet in Upstate New York. I’m passionate about educational technology using open source web 2.0 tools. I believe that empowering our children with technology will give them an opportunity to find fulfilling employment and remain in the mountains if they choose.
Navigating education reform resulting from New York’s Race to the Top has become my focus. I am a member of our school’s Inquiry Team.

Hello Steve,
Awhile ago, you posted about our WPMU+BP article and I wanted to share with you another key communication tool I am working to deploy – Kaltura Community Edition.
This allows teachers to embed videos, allow remixing of videos, and much more. It has an editor layout similar to iMovie on the Mac. I have a demo of the product over here: http://video.dearbornschools.org/editthis/Along with the video embedding/uploading, it also allows direct recording from a webcam and embedding in a post inside WordPress if you integrate it with Red5 or FMS.
I don’t have it fully functional yet, but it opens a whole new world of interaction between students and teachers.
If you decide to deploy this as well, share with me your notes on getting it 100% functional. I can get everything to work except saving of remixes.
Also as an update, we just switched all of our teacher blogs over to WPMU+BP this summer. So now we have the student site(protected) and the teacher site (open).

Steve,
It seems we may have not only similar interests, but living in same locale. I’m in Saratoga Springs, NY and I work for Empire State College. I’ve been researching, testing, debating on using Elgg, BuddyPress, and I part of a team that developed our college’s new internal faculty/staff Drupal-based portal. Right now I’m developing WPMU/Buddypress platform for instructional blogging: http://blogs.empire-edutools.net/I’m also interested in Drupal path too. Been keeping my eyes on OpenAtrium, and smallCore
Are you based in Greenwich? My fiance works for Ed Levin.
Perhaps we can get together for coffee/tea/beer and pick each other’s brains?
