If you used Subversion to install Elgg using SSH, upgrading to Elgg 1.1 stable is a snap. Simply log in and: cd yourelggdirectory svn sw https://code.elgg.org/elgg/releases/core/elgg1.1/ . Checking into the Elgg SVN repository is something I do on a regular basis. I was surprised to see over 40 revisions since I checked in the other day. Version.php now reflects release number 1.09.
